Why "Distance to Settlement"

Names should carry more than one meaning and admit to none of them too quickly. This one has two, and the double reading is the whole point.

The first reading is geographic. Settlement as the edge of the known map — the last town before the trail, the last porch light before the tree line. Distance to settlement is the old way of stating how far you are from help, from resupply, from the assumptions that hold only inside the grid. A large number there is exposure. It is also, not coincidentally, room to think.

The second reading is financial. Settlement is the moment a position finally closes: the debt reconciles, the trade clears, the argument ends in a number both parties sign. Everything before that moment is open — open to renegotiation, to drift, to hope. Distance to settlement is the measure of how much is still unresolved, and therefore how much is still in play.

Most of the questions worth writing about live in that gap: between the position taken and the position closed, between the edge of the grid and whatever lies past it. This site is notes from the gap. The name is the subject.
